Restorative therapy is a new and rapidly growing area of veterinary science. Restorative therapy aims to use elements of the patient's own body to stimulate repair of damaged tissues and joints. vetXS can now offer Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) at your clinic in order to help patients with a range of orthopaedic and soft tissue problems.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP): PRP is an autologous conditioned plasma that is highly concentrated with platelets. Aside from their clotting function, platelets contain numerous beneficial growth factors that aid in the healing and repair of tissues by encouraging new cells or tissue growth. Growth factors that contribute to the production of hyaline cartilage are very useful in treating osteoarthritis. Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) increases chondrocyte proliferation and proteoglycan synthesis this is especially helpful in osteoarthritis on account of the limited healing ability of articular cartilage. PRP can be obtained from a jugular blood sample and is administered to the patient under a short anaesthetic.
Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC): BMAC stem cells are mononuclear cells obtained from a bone marrow aspirate. Stem cells are progenitor cell lines that release tissue biomarkers which stimulate surrounding tissue to repair and regenerate. BMAC can be used to modulate disease processes, decrease pain and inflammation and aid in the regeneration of injured or aging tissue. BMAC is especially useful for treating soft tissue strains and sprains, though can be used to treat arthritis also.
Your client needs to be aware restorative therapy is not curative and will produce an uncertain duration of effect ranging from a few weeks to 6 months or more. The duration of effect is enhanced by repeat treatments (the second after a 2-4 week interval). Improvement in patient lameness scores and reduction in the requirement for analgesic/anti-inflammatory medication can be expected in the duration of effect in all cases.
