Ruby is a 5 year old Norwich terrier and a patient at Harrogate New Park Vets4Pets. She started having problems with one of her hind legs that required corrective surgery recently. Her owner, Julia explains:
"Ruby had had several previous surgeries in the past at another vets for unstable kneecaps and although she was a bit stiff in the mornings she was generally doing well. A few weeks ago her left knee started clicking and she wanted to stretch it out all the time. My usual vet Dr. Smit-Cordeiro decided to do some x-rays as he was worried about Ruby's cruciate ligament. He discussed his suspicions with me and recommended that he sent the x-rays to Dr. Currivan for advice".
On the basis of the x-rays and examination of Ruby, Dr. Currivan diagnosed a rupture of the left anterior cruciate ligament. This is what was causing Ruby her discomfort and surgery was needed to address the problem. Ruby had an appointment with Dr. Currivan quickly arranged Vets4Pets and she underwent a tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) procedure to stabilise her left knee.
It has been about a month since the operation and Julia is really pleased with how Ruby has been getting on:
"Ruby's recovery has been nothing short of amazing, she is walking normally, is back to her old self, her scar is neat with no stitches that need to come out and all this is all down to the skill of one brilliant veterinary surgeon!"
TPLO is a commonly performed surgery and is the treatment of choice for canine cruciate injuries. Both Dr. Currivan and Dr. Higson are very experienced in this procedure, performing multiple cases per week.
Ruby has now only a few more weeks of lead walks and then she will be able to go back to normal play!
